FATTY LIVER DISEASE

The liver is an essential organ performing many lifesaving functions –

  • Producing bile that is needed in digestion
  • Storing iron is an important component of the blood.
  • Making protein for the body
  • Metabolism – converting nutrients into energy
  • Producing immune factors that fight against infections
  • Producing clotting factors that help stop bleeding from a wound.

Fatty liver disease is a condition in which there is excess fat build up in the liver. This prevents the liver from effectively performing its above-mentioned functions.  In most people fatty liver disease is an asymptomatic condition that produces little to no problem to the individual, but if left unaddressed it can lead to further damage and alter the liver’s ability to carry out its functions. In the early stages it is a reversible condition, required one makes the necessary changes to his diet and lifestyle.

This disorder ranges from asymptomatic fat accumulation to steatohepatitis (inflammation), fibrosis(scarring), and cirrhosis (extensive irreversible scarring of entire liver)
